If you're not a fan of spice/explicit content, I assure you, you're not alone. There are more people than you think out there who are looking for clean books—and let me tell you, they're not easy to find. More and more books are being published with explicit content, and just when you think you FINALLY found a clean book to read, you stumble across some inappropriate content that was unnecessarily thrown in.
So if you're one of those amazing people determined to introduce more clean books into the market, but you want to include romance in your book, then this blog post is for you.

Determine the level of romance you want in your book.
Do you want to keep it strictly to handholding, or do you want to include kissing? Or do you want to be even more descriptive and escalate things a notch by being a little more handsy? All of the above can be considered clean romance; you just have to determine what level you're going to write the romance at.
Are you writing slowburn or fast-paced romance?
If you're writing fast-paced romance, be careful not to escalate things too quickly. Start off with something simple like handholding and then work your way up from there. Moving at a pace too fast will make the romance feel rushed and not as realistic or relatable.
The same goes for slowburn romance, though everything happens at a much slower pace. Insert brief instances of touch every now and then to tease your readers and give them that fluttery feeling, promising them that something more will happen in the future. It can be something simple like fingers brushing, the guy tucking hair behind her ear, him kissing the back of her hand. Give your readers something to cling onto until the slowburn romance soars into a kiss or something equivalent.
Give your characters honorable standards—and have them STICK TO THEM.
Clean romance earns it name not just because it doesn't go into detail, but because the characters uphold their standards. They don't fold under pressure; they stay true as to who they are. Romance isn't just about someone's body; it's about the respectful way the guy treats the girl and vice versa.
If you're a sucker for romance like I am, then I hope these tips will help you keep it clean but also maintain the sweet joy of love.
Best of luck!
